Recruiting: Gooden Fresh Off 207-Yard Game

Here is one you want. I mean you really want because Pflugerville, Texas athlete Zaviar Gooden has size, speed and versatility. The 6-1, 200-pound Gooden also has personality. On the phone he doesn't brag about himself, but he will talk, laugh and carry on a conversation. You also have to like the fact that when you leave the subject open he talks team first.

"We're doing great," said Gooden when asked how things were going. "We're just competing for a district championship, got Round Rock Westwood this week and we're 6-2. We need to get this one on Friday."

Okay, we asked, how is he playing.? "I'm playing pretty good," he said with some humility. "I'm coming off a game where I had 207 yards rushing on 10 carries. I had two scores. Yes, I'm playing defense too, but they don't throw it my way very much."

That tells us something about the quality of coaching in District 14-5A. I wouldn't throw it at Gooden very often either. Gooden could play running back, wide receiver, or be a good size safety at the college level. His speed is in the 4.4 range.

You might remember that Gooden was in attendance for the Oklahoma State-Texas Tech game in Stillwater in September . That still is the only game he has made in person this fall.

"It was a pretty long game," said Gooden of the nearly four hour contest that OSU won 49-45. "The ball was in the air a lot that day."

Which schools are on his list right now? "Missouri, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Oklahoma and Iowa State," said Gooden. "I have visits set up to Missouri and Kansas (in December), and I am going to visit Oklahoma State for sure, I just haven't set the date up yet."

Gooden actually hopes to push those visits back a little because he would like to be playing well into December. However, if he is free you can expect all of the schools on his list of favorites to want him to pay them a visit as soon as he can.
