Recruiting: Fowler Still Committed To Tech

Defensive end Joey Fowler of Westmoore High School in Moore, Okla., has been a frequent unofficial visitor to Oklahoma State Cowboy games this season including the last two against Kansas State and Texas, but he says he is still committed to Texas Tech. The 6-5, 260-pound defensive end has been a dominant force on the defensive line for the Jaguars.

Granted an extra semester of eligibility by the OSSAA, Fowler had 104 tackles and six sacks in the 2006 season. This season his numbers are comparable and he is four tackles for loss away from a Westmoore school record. He'll try to close in on that by helping the Jaguars in their playoff opener Thursday night at Lawton.

"I feel real good about our team right now," said Fowler on the eve of the playoff opener. "We had a couple of games that didn't come out the way we would have liked, but we are more experienced and we have moved some people around and fixed some of those problems. We are on a roll right now as far as playing on the road, so I am confident about how we'll play in the playoffs."

Fowler hinted the added year has helped him and his play as he prepares to take his game to the college level in the near future.

"I feel real good about the way I am playing the past couple of games," he said. "I've had four or five sacks the past couple of games and I am four tackles away from that school record. I've done better and I've played with more patience and played under control. I've really worked on playing with better technique."

As for the recruiting, Fowler didn't hesitate to clarify his situation and explain why he has been a frequent visitor to Oklahoma State dating back to the summer.

"I am committed to Texas Tech and have been since early June," started Fowler. "I am pretty solid on Tech, but it is nice to see some other programs and I have pretty good relationships with the coaches at Oklahoma State and it is close by. I am comfortable with Texas Tech, but I am interested in Oklahoma State kind of as a backup."

The next month Fowler is most interested in keeping Westmoore alive in the Oklahoma Class 6A playoff chase, but when that is over it will be interesting to see what happens regarding his recruiting and Texas Tech and Oklahoma State.
