Recruiting: Burgess Impressed With Gundy

Quite possibly the most needed of the prospects that visited Oklahoma State this recruiting weekend was Georgia Military College defensive tackle LeRoy Burgess. The 6-1, 300-pounder was reportedly very impressive physically at a position where Oklahoma State hopes this recruiting class and members in it will allow them to be more physical.

Burgess had 26 total tackles at GMC and 6.5 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, and even had an interception. Burgess said his visit went great and he was surprised by the head coach, who he came in thinking was a little intimidating.

"The visit was great, and the first thing that really impressed me was Coach (Mike) Gundy," said Burgess after arriving back in Georgia from the visit. "You see him on TV in the sunglasses on the sidelines and he seems intimidating and then there was that speech (postgame tirade) on the internet. I wasn't sure what to think.

"Coach Gundy is really a family guy. He cares a lot about family values and he wants what is best for his players. I really came away liking Coach Gundy, and I like that he cares so much about the players."

Burgess, who said he was hosted by defensive end Ugo Chinasa, thought the players were good and he recognizes after sitting down with defensive coordinator Tim Beckman that he would fill an immediate need on the Cowboys defense. He found another aspect of the program he was impressed by.

"The other thing that really impressed me is the stadium," he said. "That is really going to be nice and I think it says a lot about the future of the program. Oklahoma State is going to be a very good football program."

As usual, the food was good and he thought the academics were good too. Coach Beckman and Coach Gundy are planning a home visit to see Burgess' mother in South Carolina. Meanwhile, Burgess, who has visited Mississippi and N.C. State, still has one more visit he will take to Kansas State on Dec. 14.

"I will make that trip and then I think I will know something the next Tuesday," he said. "I know you have a job to do so call anytime, but on that Tuesday I should know what I'm going to do."
