Recruiting: Spano's Gift? Markelle Martin

Kody Spano has now officially switched his commitment from Oklahoma State to Nebraska, but OSU can always be appreciative of the Stephenville quarterback's efforts in recruiting safety Markelle Martin to Oklahoma State. After being beaten by Martin and Wichita Falls Rider in the Texas Class 4A playoffs, Spano was so impressed with Martin that he talked him into checking out Oklahoma State.

The 6-3, 180-pounder that plays very physical had already de-committed from Texas A&M and was committed to Oklahoma. He had been recruited by OSU and with Spano's suggestion took another look and made his final switch to OSU.

Oddly enough, as Spano was visiting Lincoln, Neb., and switching to the Huskers this weekend on an official visit, Martin was the lone high school recruit moving into the OSU dorm apartments along with seven junior college transfers.

"I like it a lot," said Martin on Sunday. "It is calm and already feels like home. I've already been out this weekend with some of the new guys and we are already bonding. Now the returning players are starting to get back today and I'm anxious to get going with everything."

OSU players have already said that the addition of Martin and junior college safety Lucien Antoine will be big for the defense and help with the transition to being much improved on that side of the football.

Martin said he is anxious to prove himself to his teammates and to his family back at home as he is the first one in his family to attend college.

"Everybody is looking up to me to be responsible and show them it can be done," said Martin.

It's interesting how things work. The Cowboys lost a standout quarterback for the future but thanks to his help filled a more immediate need with a first-team Texas All-State and District Defensive Player of the Year safety that will likely be needed a lot sooner. Recruiting is a strange game sometimes.
