New Cowboys Pick Jersey Numbers

Purely by accident I was in the Oklahoma State football equipment room doing an interview with head equipment manager Wes Edwards for a future feature for Go Pokes Magazine when the eight new Cowboy players came in to complete paperwork for the equipment staff and confirm their jersey numbers going into the spring.

The trio from junior college national champion Butler County in running back Beau Johnson, cornerback Maurice Gray, and defensive tackle Swanson Miller were in the equipment room. So was defensive end Jeremiah Price of Jones County (Miss.) C.C.; safety Lucien Antoine of Fort Scott (Kans.) C.C.; and freshman Markelle Martin from Wichita Falls, Texas.

The players are sharp and I was very impressed by their demeanor, the way they interact with each other, and the way they interact with the staff. They joked around and really seemed very appreciative of being at Oklahoma State and all that it offers.

We joked with Johnson about checking out snow shoes after the 288-yard rushing performance and four touchdowns in the national championship game against Snow. We also joked about a future pro career in Green Bay, New England or Chicago.

Johnson joked about whether number 21 was available. His facial expression clearly showed he knew that Barry Sanders' number was retired. Johnson will wear number 2 to start his college career.

His fellow junior college teammates will wear the following numbers:
Maurice Gray, CB, No. 10
Lucien Antoine, S, No. 31
Jeremiah Price, DE, No. 14
Swanson Miller, DT No. 97
Chris Donaldson, DT, No. 90
Andrew Mitchell, OT, ??

Markelle Martin is slated to wear No. 5, which would duplicate that number on defense with Keith Toston on offense.

All numbers are subject to change because of special teams situations.
