"It's a better practice. It's more enjoyable to watch," Gundy said as the Cowboys went through their third of 15 allotted spring practices on the field inside Boone Pickens Stadium.
"Guys are more active and it looks like a real game. I've spent so much time watching the quarterbacks that I haven't got to see anything else," Gundy said.
But one thing he did see was when newcomer Lucien Antoine introduced himself to wide receiver Dez Bryant. Antoine, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound transfer from Fort Scott (Kans.) Community College, showed what he's capable of doing on the first day in pads.
"Lucian Antoine blew Dez Bryant up on the sidelines today. I haven't got to see him much, but I know that he blew Dez up pretty good," Gundy said.
The Cowboy head coach also had some encouraging words about Beau Johnson, another junior college transfer who has only been on campus for a few months.
"Kendall (Hunter) and Beau (Johnson) are working with the (first team) and we have two walk-ons that are rotating in with the other groups," Gundy said. "Beau seems to doing well. I do see him some because I would notice if he made some mistakes, but he is picking (the offense) up pretty quick. It is not easy to pick up, but he is doing a nice job.
"I hope he is a factor in the first game. I think that is realistic."
Gundy also spoke about the first official scrimmage of the spring, scheduled for Friday, March 14 -- which is the first time fans will be allowed to view practice this spring since they have been closed to the public.
"We're not taking anybody to the ground. It is a live setting with wrapping up," he said. "There aren't going to be officials and all of that. We probably won't go more than 50 plays because we will be out there for about an hour and a half before we start the scrimmage."
The Cowboys will take the weekend off before resuming spring practice next week. The schedule shows that the team will practice Monday and Wednesday (both closed to the public), and then spend part of Friday's practice session scrimmaging. The practice is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m., with the scrimmage beginning at about 3 p.m.
