Hoops Recruiting: Pattillo Makes Trip To OSU

Juan Pattillo, one of the top junior college players in the nation, made his first official recruiting visit over the weekend, traveling from Twin Falls, Idaho, to Stillwater, Okla., to visit Oklahoma State. How'd the visit go? Find out in this GoPokes.com exclusive.

The 6-foot-7 sophomore forward from Las Vegas was a big reason the College of Southern Idaho won 60 games while losing just nine the past two seasons. The Golden Eagles were 30-2 this past season, with Pattillo leading the high-scoring team (they averaged more than 110 points to lead all junior college squads). He scored a team-best 17.4 points while playing just 22.1 minutes per game (which also was most on the team).

Pattillo was unavailable Sunday night after returning to CSI from Oklahoma State, but we were able to visit with Golden Eagles assistant coach Jeff Renegar, who talked to the standout player about his trip to Stillwater.

Current Cowboy Obi Muonelo was Pattillo's host player but he spent much of the weekend with the entire team.

"He said his visit went as good as you could have ever imagined. He said he really, really enjoyed everything about Oklahoma State," Renegar said. "I know he really hit it off with Sean (Sutton) and the players real well. That's the one thing that stood out to him right away when we were talking.

"He said he had a great time hanging out with Coach Sutton, and he had a great time with the guys. He said, ‘Me and these guys are like brothers already,'" Renegar continued.

"He said Sean was great, and that he had a great time talking to him about past players that they'd coached like Desmond (Mason) and Tony Allen, the same type of players as Juan, that went on (to the NBA) and are making a lot of money now."

Pattillo averaged 17.4 points while shooting 54.3 percent from the field (including 39.6 percent from three-point range) and 70.8 percent from the foul line. He also averaged 6.7 rebounds per game for the Golden Eagles.

He scored a career-best 31 points and grabbed seven rebounds in an 84-78 victory over Salt Lake (Utah) Community College on Jan. 26. Against Yavapai College on Jan. 5, Pattillo led CSI with 25 points (on 10 of 14 shooting from the field) and 10 rebounds in just 20 minutes of play in a 113-77 victory. Pattillo recorded a double-double in one four-game stretch midway through the season vs. Sheridan (15 points, 10 rebounds), vs. Treasure Valley CC (23 points, 12 rebounds), vs. Treasure Valley CC (29 points, 14 rebounds), and vs. Montana Western's JV (25 points, 10 rebounds).

Pattillo has other visits scheduled for Oklahoma (this weekend), Texas A&M and South Florida before the spring signing period (April 16-May 21).

"I asked him, ‘Are you still going on those?' and he said he wasn't for sure yet," Renegar said. "He's got a good friend in Las Vegas who is kind of a mentor to him, and the last thing he said to me was that he wanted to go back and meet with this guy ... but he said, ‘I wouldn't be surprised if I commit (to Oklahoma State) in the next couple of days.' As of right this minute, I still think he's planning to go on those visits, until I hear something different."

We are hoping to visit with Pattillo on Monday to get more information on his trip to Oklahoma State. Check back with GoPokes.com to see what he has to say.
