Recruiting: Ikard Has Seen OSU, Stanford

Standout athlete Gabe Ikard of Oklahoma City (McGuinness), Okla., was in attendance last Saturday at Oklahoma State's spring football game. The Cowboys have offered the 6-5, 235-pound tight end, defensive end and punter. While Oklahoma State is actively seeking a punter, and Ikard averaged nearly 40 yards per punt last season, he is being recruited for his talents other than punting.

"I'm up to six or seven scholarship offers," said Ikard, who is very grounded, humble and honestly, a great young man to visit with. "Notre Dame, OSU, Stanford. I went out to Stanford for spring break and it is a nice place. They had an itinerary for me and I got to attend some classes.

"Football is not as big there as it is at OSU and OU. They have so many sports that football doesn't even have its own building. It is a good school. I have also been offered by Vanderbilt, Kansas, Texas Tech. Kansas is really nice too."

Ikard had 69 tackles and an interception last season for the runaway 4A state champs. He also had five touchdown receptions playing tight end. Basketball has been just as good to Ikard as he has state championship rings for nearly every finger (one hand).

"I'm doing football off-season this spring," said Ikard when asked if he was working in track or any other sport. He is athletic enough to help the soccer team, which has also collected recent state titles. "I am focusing on football in offseason and we will have spring football coming up."

Ikard is easy going and doesn't seem to be in a rush with his recruiting. He actually should expect some more offers. He is also a champion in the classroom. He plans on being an orthopedic surgeon and majoring in pre-med.
