Recruiting: Allen A Hot Prospect

Quarterback prospect Drew Allen of San Antonio (Alamo Heights), Texas, told us he was on Valley Mills Drive in Waco and just moments away from Floyd Casey Stadium and visiting with the Baylor coaches when we returned his call Friday morning.

"Recruiting is going good," said the 6-5, 205-pound signal caller. "I really like visiting all the schools. The facilities are great to see and everybody seems to have a lot of good stuff. I also like getting to meet the coaches and learning their personalities. It's been fun all the way around and there are more schools I'm hearing from in the mail."

Allen had a terrific performance last week at the Scout Combine at the Dallas Cowboys' Valley Ranch facility. He is climbing the charts as a quarterback prospect following a season that saw him throw for 2,589 yards and 28 touchdowns and run for another 254 yards and five scores. He has made a number of unofficial visits so far but said one has stood out.

"Ole Miss," said Allen. "Coach (Kent) Austin was great and he is bringing a passing offense to Mississippi that I think I would really fit in. It's a great place and I got to meet Coach (Houston) Nutt and even though it is his first year everybody seems to be really behind him. They all seemed very together."

Allen said the four schools in Texas that are highest on his list are Texas A&M, Texas Tech, SMU and Baylor, and he also mentioned Rice. The fact that he is so excited about Ole Miss means going out of state is not out of the question.

"No, I like a lot of schools and that includes Oklahoma and Oklahoma State," he added. "I have heard from Coach (Gunter) Brewer and I think Oklahoma State is sending a coach to watch me practice next week sometime. OKlahoma and Coach (Josh) Heupel are really good. Both those schools play big time football. You know you have Coach (Bob) Stoops and how intense he is. He is Coach Stoops. Yes, I am interested in them, and KU and KSU are also coming in."

Allen seems to be enjoying recruiting now. It will be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks and months as some schools will be anxious for an answer in hopes of locking in a future quarterback.
