Recruiting: Flaig Sets Unofficial Visit

Derrick Flaig is considered one of the better linebacker prospects in Iowa coming out of Urbandale (suburb of Des Moines). Last season the 6-1, 220-pound Flaig played with his hand on the ground at defensive tackle, but this season will get the chance to show himself at a truer position for his college future at middle linebacker.

Derrick Flaig also be able to display his reported 4.7 speed. Last season he finished with 28 tackles (20 unassisted) and eight tackles for loss and four sacks. He came by those number despite missing time for a couple of separate injuries.

"I played in only a few games because of the injuries," said Flaig over the phone. "That is why I don't have an up-to-date max on my bench press and squat is because of my shoulder and hip injuries."

Flaig is busy as he is also a rightfielder in baseball and runs the 4x100 and throws the shot in track at Urbandale. He has a scholarship offer from Air Force and is being recruited by Tulsa, Iowa State, Purdue, Virginia and Northern Iowa.

"I was always a fan of Oklahoma State and I really liked watching them play growing up," said Flaig when asked how he got involved with OSU. "I sent Coach Beckman a DVD and then I emailed him and he asked me to call him. We talked and I really like him and he said keep calling and if I got the chance to come by. I let him know that we will come by on July 27."

Flaig, who is hoping to stay healthy this season, said he also grew up a fan of Central Florida because he had a cousin that played there, and of Florida and Iowa. Urbandale, which is installing a new offense and defense, has already started practice and their season kicks off in late August.
