Big 12 Media Day: Oklahoma

KANSAS CITY, MO. - He isn't the dean of coaches in the Big 12 just yet, but he is getting close, Texas Mack Brown beat him to the punch, but Bob Stoops is feeling old because his former assistants - like Mike Leach as head coach at Texas Tech, Mark Mangino at Kansas, and now Bo Pellini at Nebraska - all have found head-coaching jobs.

Stoops also has Kevin Sumlin taking over as the head coaching at the University of Houston. Okay, so Stoops gets our modern day award of how quickly a coach can build a family tree.

Stoops has bred a lot of success - five Big 12 titles, a national championship back in 2000, and as mentioned above a launching pad in Norman for future head coaches. Stoops said all those coaches on his budding family tree make him feel old. Oklahoma is not without it's problems. They have had a fair share of players getting in trouble and lately, a lack off success in BCS bowls. I would contend that losing in BCS bowls is one of those pleasant problems as you are in BCS bowls.

Oklahoma has a healthy continent of returning players with quarterback Sam Bradford, safety Nic Harris, running back DeMarco Murray, wide receiver Manual Johnson, tight end Jermaine Gresham, and three All-Big 12 picks on the offensive line. The names are being withheld to protect the guilty, but you can find them on the Preseason All-Big 12 team.

Those linemen were flagged nearly every play in the Fiesta Bowl by referee Steve Shaw's SEC crew that was working the game. Center Jon Cooper is actually a player that does not hold as much said the old addage that if you are not holding then you are not blocking. He then admitted that some of that extra stuff does go on and that there are veterans there that can help the younger players. He also added that maybe Oklahoma just gets away with more of it.

Sometimes it is special to be lucky and good, Stoops is already riding some luck and a lot of goodness throughout his football team. Holding or not, the Sooners are the clear and logical pick in the Big 12 South.
