Cowboy Practice Notes: Aug. 19

Head coach Mike Gundy has not committed to who will call the plays when the Cowboys open with the Washington State Cougars. You have to know that the decision has been made on that and we believe it will be Gundy that will actually voice the play calls on game day.

After watching Saturday's scrimmage there was thought the backup quarterback situation would be decided. It may be, but Gundy told the media not yet.

"No, we haven't done anything there," answered Gundy. "We'll probably do something there the middle of next week."

Line Platoon
There was the thought entering fall camp that the Cowboys might be deep enough on the offensive line to have a complete second line and, perhaps, rotate that line into games every third, or more likely, fourth series. That looks to be out of the question although there could be some rotation to keep the offensive line fresher.

"I think we've got six guys there," said Gundy of the offensive linemen good to go for the first game. "We're pretty solid at the tackle spot. I think he (offensive line coach Joe Wickline) feels good about having a third tackle and I think we are close to having a third guard. If so, I'm sure we'll rotate some guys in. I'm sure he'll make that decision sometime next week."

The line is apparently one player smaller in number as a source confirmed that offensive guard Michael Booker left the team at some point during camp. Booker was a sophomore out of Paris, Texas that climbed as high as number one on the depth chart at left guard but had fallen back more recently.
