Recruiting: Palmer, Tivy March On In Playoffs

In the 1999 high school football movie Varsity Blues, James Van Der Beek stars as a backup quarterback named Jonathan Moxon who leads his team to playoff glory against a team named Beeville. Okay, Colton Palmer isn't a backup, the 6-4, 205-pounder has started at quarterback and wide reciever trading off at quarterback with sophomore Johnny Maziel.

There has been some struggles for Tivy High School in Kerrville, Texas, this season but the team has persevered, and so has Palmer. The real coincidence to the movie is last week the Antlers disposed of Beeville Jones 41-24.

Palmer had a big game with 124 yards rushing and three touchdowns including a back breaking 50-yard touchdown jaunt against Beeville Jones in his recent to quarterback after several weeks. Palmer also completed 13-of-26 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown.

"Well, I felt really good about it," said Palmer. "It was a lot of fun to be back at quarterback and we got the offense rolling again."

This week Tivy will play in the Class 4A Division II quarterfinals against tough Pflugerville Hendrickson in a 2 p.m. game on Saturday at Hays' Bob Shelton Stadium.

Even though last week's win over Beeville Jones was on Friday, Palmer said he did not see the Bedlam game on Saturday.

"Everything is pretty much the same (in recruiting)." said Palmer. "I really have it on hold while the playoffs are going on. I'm still hearing from Oklahoma State. I talk to Coach (Gunter) Brewer.

"I'm really interested in Oklahoma State. I also hear from Texas State and Sam Houston State. I hear there are other schools interested and I see and hear things."

It's a mystery to us. That's okay because Palmer is a really unique athlete with his abilities.
