Recruiting: Jeremy Smith Firm With OSU

Running back Jeremy Smith of Tulsa (Union), Okla., was the first verbal commitment to Oklahoma State in the 2009 recruiting class, giving his pledge in February of 2008. That commitment has made it through tugs from schools like Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and many others.

It has made it through nearly a year, and now it has made it through a coaching change involving the coach that recruited him and would have been his position coach at Oklahoma State. OSU running backs coach Curtis Luper has left for Auburn but nothing has changed for Smith.

"I'm happy for him but that doesn't do anything to change my mind," said Smith. "I am strong with my commitment to Oklahoma State."

Asked if he'd been contacted by the Oklahoma State staff, he said he had by co-offensive coordinator Gunter Brewer.

"Coach Brewer has called me," said Smith. "He had been calling me for awhile and had told me that Coach Luper was busy, so I've been talking to Coach Brewer for awhile. He is recruiting Tracy (Moore, his friend and Union teammate). I guess he will be my recruiting coach now."

Smith said he has set his official visit for Oklahoma State for Jan. 16, which happens to be the same weekend that Moore and Owasso offensive lineman and OSU commitment Brandon Webb will be making their visits.

Smith finished with 266 carries for 1,664 yards and 30 touchdowns as a senior. He averaged 6.3 yards per carry. In his four playoff games he rushed for 736 yards and 13 touchdowns. He led Union to the 6A championship over rival Jenks with 243 yards and 3 touchdowns in the title game played on Boone Pickens Stadium.

He earned All-State honors across the board and was the Offensive Player of the Year, according to one source. Smith combines speed, shiftiness, explosion and great vision to be an all-purpose back. For his career he had 4,147 yards and 65 touchdowns.
