D.C. Interviews Ongoing; Matthews Hired

This is something I absolutely hate to do as a reporter but despite having a source I felt was solid it is becoming apparent that we jumped the gun on Reggie Herring being hired as Oklahoma State's defensive coordinator. But we have learned that Mike Gundy is looking for one less coach than a week ago as recruiting coordinator Robert Matthews has been hired as an on-the-field assistant coach.

Gundy has talked off and on throughout the day with candidates for the defensive coordinator position, according to our sources. Herring could still be a candidate for the position but it is obvious that the situation could not be as far along as we were led to believe.

Gundy spent all of last week on the road recruiting and then came back to Stillwater with his staff to host a recruiting visit weekend.

We still stand by our list of candidates that included Herring, TCU defensive coordinator Dick Bumpas, East Carolina defensive coordinator Greg Hudson, Miami, Fla., defensive coordinator Bill Young, South Carolina defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson, and Wake Forest defensive coordinator Brad Lambert.

That is a good list but we must add it is not Gundy's list. As he has been with his hires, Gundy is tight lipped and leaves little opportunity for leaks on the situation.

We did get it right and as originally reported here first, and have confirmed that Matthews has been promoted within to an on-the-field assistant coach on the offensive side of the football.

Matthews will likely coach quarterbacks, offensive coordinator Gunter Brewer will coach wide receivers, Doug Meacham remains tight ends and passing game coordinator, and Joe Wickline is run game coordinator and offensive line coach. Gundy called plays this season and is expected to do so again in 2009.

Matthews will be going into his fourth year on the staff and has worked his way up since joining the staff as coordinator of football operations. He is a former high school head coach in Georgia at Shiloh High School where he guided them to the playoffs in the state's largest class.

Prior to being a head coach he was offensive coordinator at North Gwinnett High School and an assistant coach at Camden County High School and Oconee County High School. Matthews was a three-year player at the University of Georgia and played on teams that won the Outback and Peach Bowls. He is married to former OSU women's golf head coach Laura Matthews.

Matthews was all set to join former OSU defensive coordinator Tim Beckman at Toledo as running backs coach before reconsidering after the Holiday Bowl. There were reports that Laura Matthews was offered the head coach of women's golf at Oregon, and the Ducks football program was interested in hiring Matthews.

Following the departure of assistant coaches Curtis Luper and Trooper Taylor the opportunity was there for Gundy to promote Matthews, who had become a valued member of the overall football staff.

In addition to talking with candidates for the defensive coordinator job, some members of the Oklahoma State staff are reportedly talking with candidates interested in the vacancy on the offense, probably coaching running backs. One interested candidate is former OSU running back Jamaal Fobbs, who is currently an assistant coach at Southeastern Louisiana.
