Mack Butler Returning to OSU has learned that popular Oklahoma Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee Mack Butler is returning to Oklahoma State as the director of football operations for head coach Mike Gundy and his staff. When contacted on Thursday night Butler had no comment on the story, but did not deny that he would be joining Gundy's staff.

Butler served in that position for Cowboy football from 2001 through 2004 before leaving with former OSU head coach Les Miles to LSU. Butler has handled the day-to-day running of the LSU football program since leaving Stillwater.

Butler is a 36-year coaching veteran of the Oklahoma high school ranks, major college football, and off-the-field administration.

Before coming to Oklahoma State in 2001, Butler entered into football administration as the director of football operations at Tulsa. He served in that capacity for one year after being on the field coaching for the Golden Hurricane for 11 years. While coaching at Tulsa, Butler tutored the defensive secondary, tight ends, and defensive ends. Some of his more notable players at Tulsa included former Detroit Lions second-round draft pick Tracy Scroggins, and another former Lions draft choice in Todd Franz.

Before landing at TU, Butler was an assistant coach at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M where he served as defensive secondary coach and recruiting coordinator. Prior to coaching at the junior college power Butler coached at Stigler High School and McAlester High School as an assistant and was the head coach at Wilburton High School.

As a leader in his profession, Butler continues to serve on the Director of Football Operations National Committee in 2008, representing District Four.

Butler is a 1972 graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma, where he earned his bachelor's degree in education. He then went on to earn his master's degree in administration from Southeastern Oklahoma State in 1986.

Butler joins former South Carolina assistant coach Robert Gillespie (offensive assistant coach), Robert Matthews (offensive assistant coach), and veteran college coach and administrator Johnny Barr (administrator) as recent hires by Gundy.
