Recruiting: Saunders Has Two Favorites

Safety Tommie Saunders of San Antonio (Madison), Texas has loads of choices in recruiting right now and he claims to be wide open. But of the schools that have offered him he admits that two stand out.

"OU right now and LSU," said Saunders. "I have a lot of favorites right now but those two are at the top."

The 6-0, 197-pound Saunders had 94 tackles last season with four passes broken up and an interception. His performance earned him honors as one of the best defensive players in his district and in the San Antonio region. As a result his recruiting is moving on at a fast clip.

"I have new offers," said Saunders. "Texas A&M offered the other day. Oklahoma offered recently and LSU. Texas Tech and Oklahoma State offered and I think I am up to eight offers."

Actually, by our count the list is up to nine when you also add Florida State, Missouri, Houston, and Mississippi. Saunders said that not only was Oklahoma at the top of his list but they were a big surprise on his list.

"Oklahoma was the most exciting offer because I did not talk to them before they offered," explained Saunders. "I was trying to because I was a fan of OU and I wanted them to know I was interested and I could never get a hold of Coach (Bobby Jack) Wright or Coach Stoops. Then my coach called me and from out of nowhere they had offered me a scholarship."

Saunders said he is not close to a decision, but that he would like to decide between the start of summer and the end of summer before his senior season.

"Early playing time, location from home, and finding a good coaching staff are the most important factors for me," said Saunders. "I still have a lot of work to do and a lot of information to find out."

Saunders is part of a very strong group of prospects out of Madison High School, as Oklahoma State has also offered linebacker Kris Catlin and he has been to Stillwater for a practice along with his father. Jumbo wide receiver Nate Askew is another prospect that is on Oklahoma State's radar judging from reports out of Madison.
