Recruiting: OSU Offers BTW's Barnett

Booker T. Washington High School (Tulsa, Okla.) head coach Antwain Jimmerson confirmed that his standout defensive tackle prospect Calvin Barnett (6-2, 315) has been offered a scholarship by Oklahoma State. That means the Cowboys have offered both Barnett and Washington's standout athlete Eric Bennett (5-11, 175).

Both players had huge roles in leading the Hornets to the Oklahoma Class 5A state championship this past season. Coach Jimmerson said that Bennett and Barnett are close friends and that he believes they may chose to go to a school together.

"Yes, definitely they would like to go together," said Jimmerson. "They have talked about it a lot and were looking for schools that offered them both. Arkansas had done that and now Oklahoma State has offered them both."

Last season Bennett played primarily quarterback with big numbers in earning All-State status. He ran for 1,068 yards on 160 carries with 18 touchdowns. He also completed 66-of-126 passes for 1,004 yards and 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. Bennett is being recruited to play defense by a lot of teams, including Oklahoma State recruiting him at cornerback. On defense he had 11 tackles and an interception in limited reps.

Barnett had four sacks on the season and many more tackles for loss. He has a 330-pound max on the bench press and 500-pound max on the squat. Barnett played last season with a shoulder injury that had to be surgically repaired after the season.

"He played with that bad shoulder all season and you could not even tell," said Jimmerson. "We have gone easy on him this spring and he is just getting back to lifting again. He will be full bore before long, and he would be doing that if we let him but we have a good trainer that is very careful with him.

"We were fortunate that they got him fixed up in January and he is going to be fine. He is such a good kid. He has a great personality and is a good student. His teachers really love him."

Both players have offers from schools independent of each other, but Jimmerson seems really confident it is the schools that offered both that have the best chance. Jimmerson thinks the Cowboys have a great shot at the pair now that Oklahoma State has offered Barnett.

"Yeah, Oklahoma State offering Calvin is great because that is a good place for him," said Jimmerson. "He and I talked about it. Eric (Bennett) wants to, he really likes it. His coach went there. In fact, his position coach went there too. Wade Weller is our secondary coach and Melvin Gilliam is helping us out some with the cornerbacks. Those guys played in the same secondary at Oklahoma State.

"Arkansas too, because Garrick McGee is over there and he has known Eric for a long time," added Jimmerson bringing up Arkansas. Tennessee also has offered both Barnett and Bennett.

For the time being Bennett is running track for the Hornets, sprinting the 100 meters and the 4X100 relay. Barnett is still getting that shoulder back to 100 percent.

Spring football starts in May for Washington and they will see plenty of coaches stopping by during the evaluation period.
