Recrutiing: Barnett Talks About OSU Offer

After talking to Booker T. Washington (Tulsa, Okla.) head coach Antwain Jimmerson earlier Monday we caught up with defensive tackle Calvin Barnett, one of his two standout players that are easily ranked among the top dozen prospects in Oklahoma for the 2010 college football recruiting season.

Barnett has a myriad of scholarship offers including the likes of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Iowa State, and Tennessee. He now has an offer from Oklahoma State making the Cowboys, Arkansas, and Tennessee contenders for the pair of Barnett and good friend and teammate Eric Bennett (athlete, quarterback, cornerback).

"Yes, Eric and I have talked about going to school together," said Barnett confirming what Jimmerson had talked about to us earlier Monday.

"We've been together since the fourth grade. We started playing on the same basketball team together. We were together in the fifth grade. Later I went over the Broken Arrow but then I came back. We're close and we have talked about going to the same school," Barnett continued.

The latest offer that makes for a joint possibility is the offer from Oklahoma State.

"My mom is real happy about it," said Barnett. "We were wondering why Oklahoma State hadn't offered. Oklahoma offered and other schools. I kind of wondered what was happening.

"I went to Oklahoma State (junior day) and I really liked it. I liked the facilities a lot. I just didn't know what the delay was but it doesn't matter now. If we go down to the last minute and want to stay close to home Oklahoma State is a great option and now it's an opportunity I have."

Barnett said he doesn't know what his timetable is on a decision. He reminded us he is looking to major in business and management, an academic option that can be fulfilled at a wide variety of schools. He didn't come out and say it but he hinted along with the possibility of he and Bennett going to school together that close to home is important too.

Jimmerson had told us previously that Oklahoma State and Arkansas were two schools that were recruiting the pair as hard as any. The hang up for a while was that Barnett did not have an offer but now that has changed.

Now Barnett's mother, April Allen, is happy and when mom is happy everybody tends to be happier. The recruitment of Barnett and Bennett should be extremely competitive. It may be awhile before any of the schools involved end up being as happy as Mrs. Allen.
