Recruiting: Simek Picks Up Birthday Present

Standout offensive and defensive lineman Denton Simek of Prague, Okla., celebrated his 17th birthday Wednesday and he spent part of the day in Stillwater watching Oklahoma State go through spring practice. That's right by the way, Simek is just 17 years old and the 6-6, 275-pounder will not turn 18 until after he has signed a Division I Letter of Intent.

Simek added another option for where he might sign as Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy and co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Joe Wickline offered him a scholarship before he left campus Wednesday.

"Yes, they offered me today," said Simek. "I was really impressed by what I saw. Nothing compares to the facilities. They are the amazing facilities that I have ever seen or ever heard of. Coach Atchinson (Prague head coach) has been to Nebraska and other schools and he said he had never seen anything like (the west end zone)."

Simek already had scholarship offers from Texas Tech, Missouri, Vanderbilt, Duke, Louisville, Arkansas, Kansas, and Kansas State.

"I'm really undecided," he said. "Today helped me out a lot but I really have to go back and think about where I fit best."

Obviously, Oklahoma State was fresh on his mind and while standing down on the end of the practice field with recent OSU signee and incoming freshman Parker Graham out of Webb City, Mo., Simek liked what he saw in practice. He said the coaching staff is really high with him.

"I really like Coach Gundy," said Simek. "He's a classy guy. He doesn't act like he is above you at all. He just comes over and shakes your hand and makes you feel important. He is easy to talk to. Coach Wick is great and I really like him, and I've known Coach (Gunter) Brewer for a long time."

Simek is looking to major in sports medicine or in business. He said as far as football, every school that has offered him a scholarship has said it is for offensive line as he plays both ways for Prague.

Simek is throwing the shot put for the Prague track team this spring. "I've never done it before," he said. "I don't have much technique. I just crow hop and throw it."

He displays a lot more technique with his play in football and that is obviously why Denton Simek is a 17-year-old with all kinds of options with nine scholarships in hand.
