Are You Ready For Some Orange-White Football?

You have to remember, first and foremost, that Saturday's Orange-White game is all for fun. Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy and his coaching staff have used the scrimmages and practices this spring to get all the looks they have needed at players. In the scrimmages there has been plenty of work between the first, second and third units. Saturday is all for fun ... okay, it's mostly for fun.

"It's a game for the fans and there are two things you want to accomplish in the spring game," said Gundy. "You want the young players that haven't been on the field in a pressure situation to be on the field in a pressure situation, which happens when you divide them up and have ones and twos instead of basically all ones.

"(And), you want the teams and the fans to have a lot of fun. We work hard for 14 practices and then we have a game. That is what we are trying to accomplish. We are trying to put a show on for the fans, and get the young players some experiences where you aren't out there on the grass with nobody watching but in the stadium with 15,000 people watching you."

Looking over the rosters, which are below, you can see that the split engineered by the coaching staff was pretty even. The White may have a little edge in the offensive line because anytime you have Russell Okung on your side that gives you an edge.

The defensive line was split even and interesting with the starting tackles working with the second team defensive ends on the White team and the starting defensive ends working with the second pair of defensive tackles on the Orange.

The rest of it looks very even, but I really like the White secondary with the combination of corners Terrance Anderson and Maurice Gray with safeties Lucien Antoine and Markelle Martin.

Zac Robinson will start at quarterback for the Orange but he will give way early, after a couple of series, to Alex Cate. Cate will guide the Orange and Brandon Weeden the White in a final showing for the backup quarterback job.

The other offensive triplets for the Cowboys, Dez Bryant at wide receiver and Kendall Hunter at running back, will sit it out completely. There is no need to see either of them. Robinson, like all the quarterbacks, will be protected.

Here are some things to watch for based on the opinion of yours truly and Dave Hunziker, the voice of the Cowboys.

** Watch for redshirt freshman Justin Blackmon on the White. Blackmon, with a lot of raw athletic ability, has been a hit of the spring.

** Keep an eye on Donald Booker, Hunziker loves his hitting mentality and believes he is more comfortable with the defense under new coordinator Bill Young.

** Hunziker also likes all of the young tight ends and thinks that they could provide some big plays and also the improved play on defense by the cornerbacks.

** I would challenge OSU fans to take a few plays to ignore following the football and enjoy and appreciate the work of one of, if not, the very best offensive lineman in college football in tackle Russell Okung.

** Also, keep an eye on one of the guys that directly benefits from Okung's work and that is Kye Staley. Staley has invested in the weight room and is in good shape and strong. His running this spring has shown that.

If you want a prediction, here we go. Despite a late run and some creative play calling by Doug Meacham for the Orange team, the White wins it 24-21.
