Recruiting: Vestal Says Cowboys In The Lead

Oklahoma State tight ends coach and passing game coordinator Doug Meacham is mining Arlington (Texas) Bowie High School very hard. The Cowboys already have a commitment from wide receiver Montra Nelson of Bowie, and they are actively pursuing defensive tackle Diamonte Wheeler and defensive end Donovan Vestal.

Wheeler has shown a strong interest in OSU and Vestal was even stronger when he talked to us.

"I'm still in my deciding period but Oklahoma State is number one and Kansas is number two right now," said the 6-6, 235-pound Vestal. "I was at the Kansas spring game last week and then Oklahoma State this last weekend. I can't compare how the two weekends went. I can't do that right now."

Vestal, who has scholarship offers from OSU, Kansas, Houston, Rice, Baylor, and SMU along with strong interest from Nebraska, did describe how his trip went to Oklahoma State.

"It was great, real fun," he said. "Everything was as good as I could imagine it being. (They have) great facilities and the coaches are all very cool. We saw the campus and the town and everybody says hello to you and they are so friendly everywhere.

"Coach Meacham does a good job of paying attention to us and answering all of our questions. I know they have great places to eat, but we were ripping and running every time we were out. I want to go back and check it all out some more."

Vestal said he intends to major in Business Marketing. Spring football starts at Bowie on May 1, and Vestal, who also has played basketball, said he is sticking to football only and concentrating on that being his primary sport.

"Summer, I am going to make my choice after I see all the schools that I want to see and get to know all of the coaches," added Vestal.

With both Vestal and Wheeler, Meacham has help in the recruiting process as Montra Nelson has said he is going to work on that duo as well.
