Recruiting: Stephens Talks About OSU

Larry Stephens, an All-District 21-5A cornerback out of powerhouse Galena Park (North Shore), Texas, said he is absolutely committed to Oklahoma State as reported by multiple sources last Friday. He does want to clear some things up. He had six interceptions last season and 12 passes broken up. We were mistaken when we wrote in an earlier story that he had five interceptions.

Also, his height has been reported as 5-10 or 5-11, but Stephens is 6-0, 180 pounds. He says maybe a little lighter since it is track season. He also reports that he runs a 4.5 by hand held stopwatch.

With all of that cleared up, he committed to the Cowboys because he saw players at his position moving to take the available spots.

"Since they were on the top of my list it was easy to commit to Oklahoma State," said Stephens. "They had places for two corners and one had committed and another was thinking about it, so I decided to jump on it."

Stephens had time to consider it all because while he is working out in football offseason and soon spring football, track season is on hold in Texas because of the H1N1 flu. The UIL, governing body of high school athletics in Texas, has put a ban on competitive high school sporting events until May 11.

"It was fine (the decision) because Oklahoma State is a good school and it fits what I want," said Stephens, who had visited Oklahoma State with several North Shore teammates, including incoming freshman corner for the Cowboys Andrae May of North Shore.

"It will be good to be with a former teammate from high school in Andrae. It has been strange with the track situation. I'm not used to not having anything to do on the weekends."

Stephens isn't sure what events he will get to run at state, which is now the next step. This track season he ran the 200 meters, 4X100 and 4X200 meter relays, and long jumped for the Mustangs.

Stephens had an offer from Baylor and some other schools, but mentioned that Alabama came through North Shore and showed some interest. He's not upset about waiting.

"It is pretty good to be committed and I was thinking about it a lot," said Stephens. "Now I don't have to worry about it at all."
