Recruiting: Grimes Is Red Hot

Cornerback Tony Grimes of Hollywood Hills, Fla., is the equivalent of the coals on my gas grill in my backyard. The 6-0, 173-pound speedster is RED HOT. He received an offer Wednesday from in-state Miami, a school he has been following nearly all his life, but Grimes verified a line of thinking that he has had recently and that is he isn't locked into staying in Florida for college.

"I'm pretty open to everyone," said the easy going Grimes. "I don't have anybody on top or a clear cut favorite. I'm taking all of them in.

"I have followed Miami, Florida, and Florida State my whole life. I love to watch college football. But I've been most excited about getting offers from schools like Oklahoma State, Michigan, West Virginia, and Texas Tech. Oh yeah, that's a good feeling when you get an offer from a school you know from out of state."

You can add another of those as along with the Miami offer there is an offer from Iowa. Those two go along with Oklahoma State, Michigan, West Virginia, Texas Tech, Oregon, Purdue, South Carolina, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Ohio State, and there are a few others.

Grimes is involved in spring football right now at Hollywood Hills and school won't be out until June 4. He was running track but missed the final five meets of the season with a strained quad which is healed now. Before that he was running sprints and had posted some good times. He has a 4.47 in the forty.

He earned honorable mention all-conference honors last season with 41 total tackles, 5 interceptions, and 12 passes deflected for a Hollywood Hills team that finished 2-8. Grimes vows that they will be better this season.

Grimes said he plans on checking out schools over the summer and then taking all of his official visits. "Nobody will know where I am going until signing day," he said of his recruiting decision. "I'm undecided on what I want to study."

He is decided on what he likes most about recruiting and that is forging relationships with coaches.

"Coach (Robert) Gillespie, yeah, he is a cool guy and I really like him a lot," said Grimes of the Oklahoma State assistant and former Florida player that is recruiting Grimes for the Cowboys.

"Coach Vaughn at Mississippi is a good guy. Coach (Jay) Hopson at Michigan and Coach (Doc) Holiday at West Virginia are coaches that I really like a lot. They are friends. I can talk to them all the time. Coach Hunter at South Carolina and Coach (John) Neal at Oregon, I really like them a lot to. I like Oregon and yes, I know that is a long way."

Grimes is loving recruiting and that is one of the reasons, another is all the new friends he is making, that he will stay in the recruiting game for a long time and likely all the way to the finish.
