Recruiting: Peterson Likes The Big 12

Defensive tackle Torrea Peterson of San Antonio (East Central), Texas is one of those young men that you get a really good feeling about that no matter where he ends up he will be successful on the field and in the classroom. Peterson answered the phone with us and after being asked what was new quickly came forth with some exciting news.

"Yes sir, I do have some news, I've been offered by USC and UCLA," said the 6-4, 285-pound Peterson. "It's really exciting and a little bit of a surprise to be offered by those schools. I really hadn't heard from USC, but I'm proud to hold an offer from a school with that kind of tradition in football."

Peterson holds quite a few offers as he has heard from those two California schools and has been offered a scholarship by LSU, Auburn, Arkansas, Illinois, and SMU. In the Big 12 he has heard from 11 of the 12 schools with offers from Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Colorado, Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M.

A really strong student, Peterson is working hard in the summer with his team each day. Last season he suffered an MCL that caused him to miss four games. In the other six, he made the most of it as he started four of those games and finished with 18 tackles, three sacks, and a forced fumble.

In the course of working hard to prevent a future injury he has elevated his bench press to 405 pounds and his squat to 520 pounds. As for his plans this summer beyond working out he's still determining some of it.

"I was going to go to USC camp but that is looking like that won't be possible," said Peterson. "I am going to camp at Oklahoma and Baylor. My calendar is in the next room but it will be later this month. I was looking at getting a summer job, but I haven't yet."

As for his recruiting and where he is at with the process, Peterson said it is still open.

"Not too much (has changed)," he started explaining. "I am still wide open but I'm liking the Big 12 pretty much. It is always nice to stay close to home, but if I have to go to Alabama or Nebraska to play football that is fine. Football is football and college is college and my parents know that I am going to have to go off and become a man, so they are fine with me going away to school.

"I like OSU," he continued when prompted about his thoughts on the Cowboys. "I really like Coach (Mike) Gundy and his staff and the way they are doing things. I have a friend that is a commit to OSU (Caleb Lavey) and I have been talking to him a lot. I hold them high on my list that really isn't out yet."

Peterson does have a plan for his academics as he said he knows he wants to major in History, but he is not sure if it will be U.S. History or African-American Studies.

There are plenty of reasons that Peterson has all of those offers and football and academics are both included.
