Recruiting: Barnett, Mom Check Out OSU

Standout defensive tackle Calvin Barnett of Tulsa (Washington), Okla., is gaining in popularity with colleges as he has a bundle of offers including Oklahoma State, Arkansas and USC. Antwain Jimmerson says that he knew Barnett was his best lineman when he was playing as a freshman, and that Barnett will see duty on both sides of the line in 2009 as Washington defends its Class 5A state title.

The 6-3, 315-pound Barnett and his mother, April Allen, made an unofficial visit to Stillwater a week ago Friday to check out Oklahoma State and the Cowboys' new facilities.

"I don't have a lot of thought on it," said April Allen when asked how the visit went. "There has been and will be a whole lot to Oklahoma State and the other schools. I just tried to relax on the way there. The whole process (recruiting) can be overwhelming. You know Calvin is going through it and has been going through a lot with football since he got to Washington."

Barnett had four sacks last season in Washington's pursuit of the title and he played with a bad shoulder which he had surgically repaired in the offseason and is rehabbing with the idea he will be ready to go for his senior season.

He is very strong with a 330-pound bench press max and a 500-pound max on the squat. He is also a very good student with a 3.0 GPA.

As for recruiting, Barnett has not listed a favorite or a list of favorites. His mother says her role is simple. "The only thing I'm doing with regard to the recruiting is praying about it," said Allen. "I know where he ends up going will be the right place because we will let God do it."

She added that neither she nor Calvin have been to any other schools lately and that they will need to decide soon on where he will take his five official visits. She agreed that she wants to know where Calvin is, what his surroundings are, and like any mother, the places he will be during the course of a day in college.

"We went to Oklahoma State to go and see how things have changed," she added. "As we get close we will need to make decisions on the five official visits. In the end, I know the Lord will have the final word, and I will have the final answer."
