Recruiting: Wheeler Keeps Getting Offers

No doubt about it, defensive tackle Diamonte Wheeler of Arlington (Bowie), Texas, is a character. But he is also a very talented and in demand prospect. Oklahoma State has been in on him and offered Wheeler a scholarship early on. Recently, Texas Tech, Arkansas, and Minnesota added offers to the list, and Wednesday night Wheeler texted us that another school has come around.

"Iowa State just offered me," read the text from Wheeler that also included some fun. "I g0tTa BIG eGo," read the rest of Wheeler's text as he joked about the response to his good fortune of another scholarship offer.

Wheeler is not an egomaniac but he is having fun with recruiting. He has made several visits and seems to have fun wherever he goes.

Wheeler wants to major in business and marketing, and you get the idea he will be very demanding in finding out what he needs to know. Last season he finished with 39 total tackles, 4.5 sacks, 2 fumbles recovered, and a fumble caused and he says he will demand more of himself next season to get Bowie past the area round of the playoffs.

While high school wrestling has really caught on in Texas over the past decade, you still don't hear of many football players involved in it, but it really emphasizes balance and leverage, which are major attributes for defensive tackles. Wheeler wrestled this offseason and qualified for district. He also throws the shot and discus in track.

He has a very strong lower body with a 550-pound max on the squat and a solid 280-pound max on the bench press. He also has an 18-inch vertical jump.
