Recruiting: Okafor Has A Top Three

Defensive end Joe Okafor of Houston (Bellaire), Texas said Monday night that he has narrowed down his college choices. The 6-5, 246-pound two-sport standout that has also received some recruiting attention for his play on the basketball court said he is down to three schools and he is looking strictly at football in college.

"I just narrowed it down to my top three," said Okafor. "It is either UT, LSU, or Oklahoma State. I actually decided on those three schools two weeks ago when I got back from LSU."

This is the first we had heard or read of Okafor's progress toward making a decision, so has he been avoiding the recruiting media?

"I try to," said Okafor laughing. "I went to LSU and saw it. I didn't really get to talk to the coaches since they were on vacation, but I was able to check out the campus. I had a chance to see the facilities and I was able to talk to some of the players.

"I was at Oklahoma State this spring and did talk to the coaches, players, and had a chance to see the new facilities," added Okafor. Texas, I took a visit there my sophomore year."

Okafor said he has spent the summer working out and attending summer school. He has also done a few small summer jobs like helping people move. He said he well on his way to being ready for the upcoming season.

After getting a slow start to last season becuase of his AAU basketball last summer, he is much more committed to football for this season. He finished last season with more than 30 tackles and two sacks, but has the ability to really put up some numbers this season. He is also scoping out some games to check out his top three schools.

"I'm looking at LSU-Florida, which this year is at LSU," said Okafor. "I was looking at Oklahoma State and Houston, but I think we have a game that day. We play on Thursdays the first two weeks, so maybe it could be the OSU-Georgia game. Then I was thinking about the Texas-Texas Tech game."

The Oklahoma State home game with Georgia is Saturday, Sept. 5. The Texas Tech at Texas game is the earliest Big 12 Conference game this season coming on Saturday, Sept. 19. The Florida at LSU contest is Saturday, Oct. 10.

Okafor emphasized that he is working out hard and his stature has continued to grow as he has great size and potential on the defensive line.

Asked if he has an idea when the next time is that he will narrow down his choices, his answer was simple. "Not yet."
