Recruiting: Spurgeon Looking Elsewhere

Standout offensive line prospect Trent Spurgeon of Owasso, Okla., really made it clear Wednesday that he isn't considering Oklahoma State any more as a college destination. Spurgeon, who at one time looked like he was favoring the Cowboys, says he is strongest on Texas Tech and Arizona as college options, and Tulsa is kind of sitting in the third position.

Spurgeon had mentioned SMU, where his sister attends college, prominently in the spring and early summer.

"SMU is really out of it now and you can scratch them off," said the 6-7, 260-pound Spurgeon. "I'm really looking at Texas Tech and Arizona, and Tulsa is standing by in case one of those doesn't work out. I really like Coach (Todd) Graham (head coach at Tulsa) and Coach (Herb) Hand. I'm really considering Tulsa because they are so close to home and I know just about everybody from Oklahoma that is committing to them in this class."

Asked about Oklahoma State: "No, I'm not really considering them," said Spurgeon. "Yes, you can write that."

Spurgeon said he has spent the summer doing offseason workouts with his Owasso Rams teammates and also playing AAU basketball with HWPO of Tulsa.

"We played a couple of tournaments in Tulsa, the Hardwood and the Gym Time Hoop," added Spurgeon. "The we went down to Denton for the Great American Shootout and we are going back to Dallas next week."

Spurgeon said he has not gone to any college camps or made any unofficial visits. "Recruiting has kind of died down since they can't call anymore," he said. "I still get a lot of letters."

There may be some postage being wasted as it really looks like a three team race for Spurgeon's pledge at this point.
