Recruiting: Cowboys Offer Walker Ashburn

Very polite and well spoken, defensive end Walker Ashburn of River Ridge (John Curtis), La., was quick to return a message left by Go Pokes Magazine. The 6-3, 245-pound Ashburn is pretty athletic as not only did he help Curtis win the Class 2A state championship last season but he also wrestles and competes in the shot put and discus in track and field.

After 91 total tackles and 14 sacks last season Ashburn has scholarship offers from Nebraska, Stanford, Louisiana-Lafayette, SMU, Southern Miss, Louisiana-Monroe, and now Oklahoma State.

"That is a good offer from a good school that is really up and coming," said Ashburn of his offer from the Cowboys. "They said they had been trying to get a hold of me, but then I got the letter from my coach at school because all the mail had come there. I was really happy to get it."

Ashburn said practice will begin for Curtis on Monday. Over the summer he has been working out but also checking out some of the schools he is interested in.

"All unofficial visits, but I've been to LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, ULM, Toledo, Tulane, and Southern Miss," said Ashuburn of his spring and summer stops. "I've seen all of the schools in Louisiana and in Texas. I've seen SMU because we played in Texas last year and we saw their campus."

The question is how much of a lure is Oklahoma State and would he consider them for an official visit? "Yes, because I've seen all the schools around here and if I drove my pickup there it would cost me an arm and a leg for gas," explained Ashburn.

"Yes, they would be one of my official visits. Distance isn't a factor as far as I'm concerned. I have an offer from a school in California (Stanford) and if I'm considering them, then I'm going to consider Oklahoma State."

Ashburn has a 355-pound max on the bench press, 520 pounds on the squat, and he can vertical 32 inches. He is a good student with a 3.0 GPA and a 19 ACT.

"I want to major in something related to business or science," he said when asked about a major.

It's been a while since Oklahoma State pulled a recruit out of Louisiana. Wilson Youman would be the last. It has been a good state for the Cowboys in the past.
