Cowboys Improve To 3-0

Josh White of North Texas had scored 23 and 25 points in games against Oklahoma State the past two seasons. So there was a reason for Cowboy head coach Travis Ford to be concerned entering Saturday's game against the Mean Green. But freshmen Ray Penn and Fred Gulley combined to hold White to just four points as Oklahoma State defeated North Texas 82-68 at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

White, a 5-foot-10 junior, made just one of six shots - and was 0-for-3 on three-point attempts - as Penn and Gulley harassed him from start to finish. The North Texas point guard committed four of his team's 13 turnovers, and didn't score his first points of the game until less than four minutes were remaining in the game.

"I've got to give a lot of credit to Fred Gulley and Ray Penn for this win. Our freshmen won that battle," Ford said.

Although Penn and Gulley combined for just four points – equalizing the output of the Mean Green's leading scorer – they combined for six assists and just one turnover (compared to White's five assists and four turnovers).

"All Ray heard about the last two days (during practice) was how good the other team's point guard is, and I think he took that as a challenge," Ford said. "Those two guys did a terrific job on Josh White.

"I'm proud of our team. This was a very good victory for us," Ford added.

James Anderson led the Cowboys as he came within one rebound of recording his third consecutive double-double to open the season. He finished with 25 points and nine rebounds.

Marshall Moses finished with 10 points and nine rebounds in 28 minutes of play, while Obi Muonelo (17 points and seven rebounds) and Keiton Page (13 points) also made significant contributions. Matt Pilgrim came off the bench and played just 13 minutes because of foul trouble but added nine points and two blocks to the winning effort.

The Cowboys shot 53.6 percent from the field and were 7-of-17 from three-point range for 41.2 percent.

Oklahoma State improves to 3-0 with the victory, and returns to action Tuesday night against Prairie View A&M at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
