Recruiting: Stephens Says He Is Solid

Cornerback prospect and Oklahoma State commitment Larry Stephens of Galena Park (North Shore), Texas called us right after he left Bible study Wednesday night with his mother and his brothers and sisters.

The 5-11, 175-pound standout for the Mustangs has been rumored to being hit on by other schools but he told us that his recruiting attention has been light and he is solid with Oklahoma State after committing to the Cowboys last summer.

"Yes sir, I'm going up there on my visit on Jan. 15," said Stephens when asked about his recruiting situation. "I am solid with Oklahoma State.

"I've been hearing some from other schools. Really, I have just been getting letters and stuff. It really isn't anything. Coach (Joe) DeForest was up here on Tuesday in the school and we talked and stuff and that is the only coach I've seen."

One of Stephens' Galena Park North Shore teammates, wide receiver DeAndrew White, who at one time was also being recruited by Oklahoma State, is now committed to Alabama and that often can cause a stir that another proepct can be persuaded. It is that time of year.

We also let Stephens know we would be calling him back for a recruiting issue feature and would be wanting to talk to him about something important in his life outside of football.

Stephens said he will spend the spring training and will run track for the Mustangs. His events include the 4x200 meter relay, 200 meters, and long jump.

As for his Christmas break he said that went well. "It was good, real good," he said. "I got a lot of money and shirts and stuff."

Stephens was coming off a tremendous junior season that saw him named to the Class 5A All-State Team after posting 47 tackles, five interceptions, and 12 pass break ups. He was also first team All-District 21-5A.

This season with schools well aware of who Stephens is and how well he played, less throws went his direction and he finished with just one interception but his team made the playoffs and Stephens was second team All-District 21-5A. It doesn't really matter as he has proven his ability as a cover specialist.
