Cowboys score three runs in eighth, slide by Zags

Oklahoma State put its early diamond troubles on the back burner for the last matchup of the weekend. Chris Gutierrez blasted a two-run base hit, and Josh Fields went 3-for-4 against Gonzaga.

SURPRISE, Ariz.Oklahoma State used a three-run eighth inning to squeak past Gonzaga, 3-1, in baseball action Sunday afternoon at Surprise Stadium.

Centerfielder Jose Virgil opened the eighth with a base hit to center and advanced all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Josh Fields that allowed Virgil to beat the Gonzaga shortstop back to the third base bag. After an intentional walk of catcher Jason Jaramillo, first baseman John Urick had a RBI groundout to second allowing Virgil to score. Gonzaga reliever Josh Monroe then hit left fielder Ryan Olivo and walked right fielder Jeff Tuttle before shortstop Chris Gutierrez knocked a two-run single to leftfield to give the Cowboys a 3-0 advantage.

Fields led OSU at the plate going 3-for-4 while Virgil chipped in with two hits on the afternoon.

Junior Cody King (1-0) picked up the win with 2.1 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief while Daniel Rew pitched out of a bases loaded no-out jam in the bottom of the ninth, allowing just one run to pick up his first save of the year.

The Cowboys salvaged the win after losing the first two games in the Coca-Cola Classic and improved to 2-3 on the year, while the Zags lost all three of their games in the tourney to drop to 0-3.
