Recruiting: Thompson Likes State Schools

Defensive tackle Micah Thompson of Jones, Okla., is a big guy at 6-4 1/2 and now weighing in at 295 pounds. The inside technique for the Jones High School Longhorns says he grew up mostly an Oklahoma State fan but he is branching out in recruiting so far and checking out all three of the Oklahoma schools.

"Recruiting is going good right now and I'm liking it so far," said Thompson, who also competes in track throwing the shot put and discus and is a powerlifter.

"I went to Tulsa for their junior day this past weekend. There were a few guys from around here there and there were some players from Texas there too. I thought it was pretty cool. It is a pretty nice college and they work hard there. I was hanging out with Coach West (Ron West who just today took a position on the Illinois coaching staff). The defensive line coach wasn't there. He was giving a seminar somewhere."

Thompson knows Oklahoma State has a junior day on Sunday.

"Yes, I know it is this weekend," he said. "I'm thinking I may go but I've been up there. I was up there as a sophomore. I went to OU and their junior day. I think that was about a week ago. It was pretty good and I like Coach (Jackie) Shipp."

Thompson said he has heard from a number of schools, mainly by mail, and Texas Tech is the one he puts in there with the Oklahoma schools.

"I think Texas Tech is pretty cool," he added. "I may try and go out there sometime."

Thompson is a happy guy in talking about recruiting as he seems to be hearing from the schools he likes. It would seem that he would prefer to stay close around here.

He also reported that his most recent forty time was 5.4 and that he has a 315-pound bench press max and a 485-pound max on the squat.
