Recruiting: Smothers Is Wide Open

It seems like one of the most difficult accomplishments in recruiting in this region is to get a top football prospect in Arkansas to leave the state. The Razorbacks at the University of Arkansas seem to be pretty good at building walls or ditches that keep their prospects at home. Offensive lineman Mitch Smothers of Springdale, Ark., says he grew up an Arkansas fan but is open in recruiting.

"I'll go anywhere," said the 6-4, 290-pound center and guard prospect. "I'm not going to limit myself. I grew up as an Arkansas Razorbacks fan, and Arkansas is one of the schools that has offered me a scholarship, but I am taking this (recruiting) as it goes. I want to check out the schools and I will go anywhere that fits me."

Smothers is a strong player that has shown he can be physically dominating inside in the trenches. Smothers has a bench press maximum of 370 pounds and also has a squat of 480 pounds.

Besides Arkansas, Missouri, Tulsa, Mississippi State, and Kentucky have offered Smothers a scholarship. He has been to Junior Days at Arkansas, and Tulsa and also visited Missouri. This past Sunday he made the drive to Oklahoma State's Junior Day after hearing from offensive line coach Joe Wickline and head coach Mike Gundy and being offered a scholarship by the Cowboys.

"It was pretty good," said Smothers of his OSU experience. "I really liked meeting the coaches and I think they are nice guys. I get along with Coach Wickline and I think he would be a good coach to play for. The facilities are great too."

Smothers doesn't appear to be a prospect that is going to make a quick decision, but he does know what he is looking for. "It is academics first," he said. "I'm not sure on my major. I am undecided for now, but education is first. After that it is football and being at a place where I can have success."

Smothers wasn't the only Arkansas offensive line prospect at the OSU Junior Day as we also heard that Springdale (Har-Ber) offensive lineman Brey Cook made the trip to Stillwater.
