Recruiting: Ornelas Hits The Road

Linebacker/safety Nico Ornelas of North Richland Hills (Richland), Texas already has offers from Arkansas, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, Purdue, Northwestern, and Iowa State. The 6-3, 200-pounder recently turned in a 4.56 in the forty and he runs all the relays (4x100, 4x200, and 4x400) for the Richland track team.

This weekend he hit I-35 to check out two schools he was interested in going to, making trips to Kansas for the Jayhawks spring game Saturday and stopping at Oklahoma State for a tour on the way up.

"Kansas was all right," said Ornelas. "I liked the facilities and the coaches were great. They really made me feel welcome. They also have a nice campus."

While he wasn't at Oklahoma State for very long, he said the facilities in the west end zone made an impact.

"Oklahoma State I liked," he said. "I got to see all of the new facilities and the stadium. The facilities, all of them, locker room, weight room, meeting rooms, coaches offices, were very, very nice."

Ornelas said that he has heard from a lot of other schools in addition to those that have offered. "I've got a lot of mail," he said. "I can't even begin to name all the schools that I have mail from."

Besides Oklahoma State we know that Oklahoma, Baylor, SMU, Texas A&M and Texas Tech have shown interest in Ornelas.

Last season he finished with 76 total tackles, 12 passes defended, and a blocked punt that he scooped and scored on.

He said he is not sure about camps this summer but spring football starts at Richland on Tuesday. There will be more than a few coaches stopping by to check on Ornelas.
