Recruiting: Jesse Williams Talks OSU, Big 12

This may be the recruiting prospect that we have spent the most time trying to reach to write a story on. Of course, Jesse Williams is one of the recruits that hails from as far away as any in Oklahoma State recruiting history. Steve Box, Williams' high school coach in Brisbane, Australia, e-mailed us some comments recently from Williams on Oklahoma State.

Williams is in Australia spending some time at home before coming back to the United States for his sophomore season. The Australian native is much closer to Stillwater most of the time as he heads into his final season of a successful stint at Arizona Western Community College in Yuma, Ariz.

Williams represents not the 3:10 to Yuma but the 330 from Yuma, as in 6-4, 330 pounds of rock solid defensive tackle.

Williams, who is a member of the Austrailian team in the World Football Championship for 2010, earned plenty of recognition as a freshman last season with 46 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. He was named first team All-Arizona Community College Athletic Conference and was second team All-Western States Football League.

How good is Williams? There have been close to 30 schools offer him scholarships to come continue his football and academic career at their campus. Offers have come from the likes of Arizona State, Arizona, Arkansas, BYU, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Syracuse, UCLA, and West Virginia.

Box reports that Williams has narrowed his list down to five and those fortunate schools are Oklahoma State, Alabama, LSU, Mississiippi, and Oregon State.

The comments Williams made and that we received only dealt with his thought on Oklahoma State. Yes, he has been to Stillwater to check out the campus.

"I really like the passion Coach (Mike) Gundy has for the program and his players," expressed Williams by email. "That sort of loyalty and commitment is a quality that is important in a process like this. The recent success of OSU getting players to the next level definitely has an appeal as well."

For somebody that was initiated into football outside the United States, Williams shows he has a great appreciation for tradition, history, and excellence in the sport.

"The Big 12 is a big-time conference and with the offenses we'd face every week, you know that is a real proving ground," he added.

It's not known when Williams might make his decision, and he is using Box and other coaches and his family as sounding boards for thoughts and opinions. He recognizes that at defensive tackle he will have an immediate opportunity in Stillwater.

"I like the fact that Oklahoma State offers the chance to make a contribution straight away, Williams stated. "It will be a tough decision, but I feel really comfortable with the group of schools in my top five."

What Gundy, defensive coordinator Bill Young and Cowboy fans have to be hoping is that Jesse Williams becomes the "330 from Yuma to Stillwater."
