OSU: Looking Into The Future

What will Oklahoma State's football schedule and men's basketball schedule look like if the anticipated move to the Pac-10 Conference is finalized? Here is one person's projection of what the Cowboys' schedules could be in the not so distance future (of course, I've taken some liberties to upgrade the schedule, including teams most fans would enjoy seeing in person).

Both the football and basketball schedules found below are based on the new conference having 16 teams – the 10 teams currently in the Pac-10, Colorado (which announced Thursday it was leaving the Big 12 for the Pac-10 in 2012), and the five other schools that are believed to be strongly considering leaving the Big 12 (Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech).

I based this scheduling formula on the 16-team conference being broken into two divisions (although both Mike Gundy and Travis Ford said Thursday that they would prefer that the new conference not be split into divisions). But in this scenario, one division would place the six Big 12 schools together with Arizona and Arizona State, and the other division would include the remaining eight teams currently in the Pac-10 (USC, UCLA, Stanford, California, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State).

Thus, in football the Cowboys would play each team in their division each season and play two games against teams from the other Pac-10 division (which results in nine conference games each year). As you see below, the two crossover games for the 2012 season would be Stanford and USC.

I also used the two-division format in basketball with each school playing a home-and-home series against the seven teams in the division and four crossover games against teams from the other division (for a total of 18 conference games). In the scenario below for the 2012-13 season, Oklahoma State's crossover games are Oregon, Oregon State, USC and UCLA.

In putting together the football season, I used the three non-conference football games that OSU already has contracts for during the 2012 season – Tulsa, Rice and Louisiana-Lafayette.

However, in putting together a nonconference basketball schedule for the 2012-13 season, I listened to the concerns of Cowboy fans who have become increasingly disenchanted with the inability of OSU to attract high-profile teams to play at Gallagher-Iba Arena. Travis Ford may not like the schedule I've compiled but it's one that Cowboy fans would sure enjoy (and so I took the liberty to schedule games with teams we'd all like to see travel to Stillwater, Tulsa and Oklahoma City). North Carolina, Creighton and Oral Roberts would make trips to GIA, and the Cowboys would also face Georgetown (in Tulsa) and Indiana (at the All-College Classic in Oklahoma City) in nonconference games.
