Sooners Tip Things Off Tonight at 7 p.m.

The Sooners tip off the season opener tonight at 7 p.m. against Coppin State, and the equation coming into this season is real simple.

Without a dominant scorer, they must be fundamental and play within themselves to compete this year.

"We have to figure out, really play to our strengths, what our strengths our," said head coach Jeff Capel. "Each of our guys has a strength. They have something that they're good at. Some guys might have more than one strength, but you have to value whatever I feel your strength is."

Senior guard Cade Davis, the only senior on this squad, will definitely have to pick up the leadership role with this group.

Sophomore guard Steven Pledger will be expected to step up more this year in a scoring role on the perimeter.

On top of that, he might have to shoulder the point guard position at times with incoming guards Carl Blair and Calvin Newell adapting to the system.

That will allow the Sooners to maximize their guard potential, using Davis, Pledger and freshman guard Cameron Clark all at the same time.

"So Steven being able to play that position for us at times will allow us to perhaps have our three better guards out there together," Capel said.

Forwards Andrew Fitzgerald and Nick Thompson need to take care of the glass for this undersized Sooner team.

And although the Sooners won't have any standout players, the one thing they may have going for them is the team chemistry aspect, something that was sorely lacking last year with egos on the team.

Everyone will get their first chance to see that and more about the team tonight.
