Overall team performance: B+
The Sooners jumped out to a huge lead in the first half behind stifling defense that limited Gardner Webb to just 31.8 percent shooting in the first half. But they were slow out of the gates in the second half in allowing that advantage to be chipped to only four. Nonetheless, OU responded with a run of its own after that to expand a double digit lead yet again, and it went on to win. OU outshot GWU 49 percent to 41.3 percent, and OU had 11 more assists than its opposition. The Sooners, however, tied with the Bulldogs in the rebounding department.
G Cade Davis: B+
Call it a pretty solid performance, and here's why. Davis was 6-for-10 from the field, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc, on his way to 15 points. He also had five rebounds, three assists and a steal. The reason he's not in the A-line, though, is because of turnovers. Davis gave it up four times.
G Steven Pledger: A
Pledger led the way for the Sooners with 20 points on 6-for-11 shooting. He, like Davis, was also on from long range, converting four of his eight attempts there. And he got involved in some other ways, bringing down three rebounds to go along with a pair of assists and a steal. The only downside was a couple of turnovers.
G Cameron Clark: A+
Clark was another one of four Sooners in double figures, as he racked up 13 points of his own on 4-for-9 shooting. He didn't have a single turnover, grabbed three boards and had an assist, block and two steals. Clark was also a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. There's not a whole lot to complain about here.
G Calvin Newell: B
He started and played 16 minutes, and while it wasn't the flashiest performance, he was fundamentally sound. Newell had three assists to no turnovers and added a rebound to that. He was 0-for-2 from the field, but besides that, he did his job.
F Andrew Fitzgerald: B+
It was a good outing for Fitzgerald as well, but he stays in the B-range for a couple of reasons. First, he was in foul trouble for a large portion of the contest and eventually fouled out. Even head coach Jeff Capel stressed after the game in the press conference how crucial it is for him to stay in the game. Second, Fitzgerald had three turnovers. But here's the bright side. He finished with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting and also racked up five boards, two steals, an assist and a block.
OU didn't get much in the form of bench production. Gardner Webb outscored the Sooner reserves 23-7, as guard Carl Blair had six points and post C.J. Washington added a free throw. But Blair had himself a ball game, dishing out seven assists to go along with his six points. In total, OU's bench produced 11 rebounds, seven points, seven assists, a block and a steal.
