Stoops Stays Put

OU head coach Bob Stoops put an end to the rumors and speculation this afternoon that he was in serious negotiations with Florida to be Urban Meyer's successor.

Florida put an official end to it tonight after hiring Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

After a report came out from Saturday morning that Stoops and Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley were "finalizing a contract" that would supposedly compensate him $55 million plus incentives for 10 years, the Sooner head coach shut it down.

"Not true, whatsoever," Stoops said in a text to the Tulsa World. "I'm out recruiting as we text."

Athletic Director Joe Castiglione strengthened that statement.

"If there's nothing to it, why should we have to corroborate it?" Castiglione said at the OU-Oral Roberts basketball game.

Hours later, the Gators hired Muschamp, the head-coach-in-waiting at Texas, ending all speculation.

This makes three times since 2002 that Stoops has been listed as a serious candidate for the UF job and now three times he's remained the coach of the Crimson and Cream.

Now that Stoops and the Sooners are past a major speed bump, they can focus on filling the offensive coordinator vacancy recently left behind by Kevin Wilson, as well as preparing for the Fiesta Bowl.
