Stoops talks about Saturday's scrimmage

Bob Stoops talks about Saturday's scrimmage, plus comments on Donta Hickson and Larry Birdine

On the scrimmage
"The scrimmage went real well. I am very pleased as always when you go through a 100 plus scrimmage and nobody got hurt. I think Wayne Chambers dislocated his finger, but he is going to be fine. The guys are competing well and the guys are learning a lot. You always see guys with little experience in there making mistakes, but they did a little bit better form the last scrimmages. That is why you are out here scrimmaging and competing now to see guys make plays that you haven't seen them make before. I believe that we have more depth than we have had and more players are making plays."

On Donta Hickson's 14 carry 182-yard performance
"Donta is having a big spring. He has physically matured a lot during the last year and he has begun to catch his stride. He is having an excellent spring and he has always had a good attitude and worked hard. I think he is ready to play. We also like what KeJuan (Jones), Renaldo (Works) are doing and Jerod (Estus) as well. However, Donta is really coming on."

On young players on defense
"We have a lot of young players who are making plays on defense and are getting better. Larry (Birdine) had a bunch of good plays out there today and Rufus (Alexander) did as well, and that is despite the fact there is a lot to learn at linebacker. But he (Alexander) is getting better and he has great ability to make plays with his great speed and quickness. Zach Latimer always has a knack coming around the corner, whether that is at the ‘sam' linebacker or rush end. They are all going to be good players."

On Larry Birdine, who had two tackles and two pass deflections
"Larry is going to be an outstanding defensive end. He has a body and the ability to run and he is making more plays in the pass rush game and is understanding what his responsibilities are within our defense. As that all continues to improve he is going to continue to be a good player.
