OU-UMES: Report Card

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated grades out OU's 73-49 victory over the Hawks at Lloyd Noble Center Monday night.

Overall team performance: B+

The final score says the Sooners won this game but 24 points, but don't be deceived. For much of this game, it was close, characterized by a plethora of OU turnovers. OU racked up 13 of its 17 in the first half. However, the Sooners tightened that up and closed the game on a 34-10 run in the final 10:59. They shot 58.1 percent while holding UMES to only 32.8 percent. The Sooners also hit 83.3 percent from the free throw line and out-rebounded the Hawks 34-30.

G Cade Davis: A

In assuming more of a forward role, Davis picked up a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. All of his 11 points came in the second half, and eight of his 12 boards were in the first. He was 3-for-7 from the field and also hit a pair of free throws, while racking up two assists and a steal to only one turnover.

G Steven Pledger: A

Pledger led all scorers with 19 points on his 6-for-9 shooting. That included a 3-for-4 performance from behind the arc. He was also a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe and also tallied two rebounds and two steals. The only negative for Pledger in his 32 minutes was four turnovers.

G Cameron Clark: A

Clark had a highlight reel night with four dunks on his way to 14 points and nine rebounds. He was 5-for-11 shooting and was also perfect from the line, hitting 3-of-3 there. Two assists and two blocks rounded out his production, but despite all these numbers, head coach Jeff Capel pointed out his defense and how he needs to be better and stopping his guys from penetrating the lane.

G Carl Blair: B+

In 17 minutes, Blair was efficient in the turnover-assist column, distributing seven dimes to only one turnover. Three of those were assists on Clark's dunks. Blair was the fourth Sooner to shoot perfect from the free throw line, hitting his only two attempts there. He didn't score, however.

F Andrew Fitzgerald: C

Fitzgerald managed 11 points on 4-for-6 from the field in 22 minutes, but he had three turnovers, and perhaps more concerning, he was in foul trouble. He finished with four, and Capel said he has to change that for OU to maximize its potential. Also, Fitzgerald only brought down one rebound, two reasons he failed to get out of the C-line despite finishing in double figures.

Bench: B+

This group really picked up its play in the second half, scoring 14 of its 16 points. The Sooner reserves were outscored 11-2 in the first half and ended the game tied at 16 with UMES's bench. Four different players scored, including forwards C.J. Washington (9), Tyler Neal (3), Barry Honore (2) and Nick Thompson (2). The unit also picked up eight boards.
