McCoy Set to Return to Norman

NORMAN, Okla. -- One former Sooner has been scheduled to return to the area for months, but now another has joined the party this week.

No. 3 NFL Draft pick, two-time All-American and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy will be in attendance Sunday at the OU-Baylor women's basketball game and Cheer Like a Champion Day, joining No. 1 NBA Draft pick and All-Star Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin as Sooners back in the Oklahoma City metro this week.

Griffin takes on the Oklahoma City Thunder at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at Oklahoma City Arena.

As for McCoy, he racked up 28 tackles and three sacks during 2010 prior to suffering a torn bicep that placed him on injured reserve for the final three games of the season.

Before that, he was a dominant defensive player at OU.

McCoy set a school record with 40 consecutive starts on the defensive line from 2007 through 2009.

In that time frame, he recorded 83 tackles, including 33 tackles for loss, 14.5 of which were sacks.

McCoy dominated in his final season as a Sooner, finishing with 33 tackles for loss, including six sacks, all part of 34 total tackles.

In light of his return, there will be 5,000 special edition McCoy posters distributed at the entrance.

Not only that, but the first 2,000 fans in attendance will be given a scratch card, and 100 of those will have his logo, which will admit them to an exclusive VIP autograph and photo session with the former Sooner star following the conclusion of the contest.

Additionally, McCoy will meet with the media prior to the game, so stick with Sooners Illustrated with all the premium coverage.
