OU Sweeps San Diego Tournament

The No. 2 baseball team extends its winning streak to start the season to 14 games after defeating the San Diego State Aztecs 13-5 during the final game of OU's road trip.

The Sooners went 5-0 during the road trip and 4-0 in the San Diego Tournament. The last time OU had a 14-game winning streak was in 1985.

Freshman pitcher Dillon Overton got out to a rocky start by allowing two runs in the first inning, but the bats quickly backed him up in the second.

Junior first baseman Cameron Seitzer started the inning with a double to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Senior designated hitter Casey Johnson hit his first of two doubles of the day to plate OU's first run.

After an infield single to put runners on the corners, senior shortstop Cale Ellis laid down a bunt single to tie the game at two runs apiece. Sophomore left fielder Max White flexed his muscles and launched one over the left-center field fence, and junior right fielder Cody Reine singled in a run to give the Sooners a 6-2 lead that Overton protected for the rest of the game.

The freshman lefty held San Diego State scoreless in his final five innings of work while his offense tacked on another run in the third on a solo shot by junior second baseman Evan Mistich and three more in the sixth and seventh innings.

The Aztecs tried mounting a comeback in the seventh by plating three runs against OU's bullpen, but the Sooners removed any doubt of victory when they tacked on two runs in the eighth and another in the ninth.

The victory was Overton's second in the past week and third as a starter. The two runs upped his ERA to a miniscule 1.47 in 18 1/3 innings.

And it's easy to earn victories when your offense puts up the numbers it did in the road finale. OU pounded San Diego State pitching for 20 hits.

This was the fourth time the Sooners put up a 20-spot in the hits column.

Of the 20 hits, junior third baseman Garrett Buechele, junior center fielder Chris Ellison and Johnson each recorded three, and four more players had at least two hits apiece.

OU returns to Norman for a weekend series with Arkansas-Little Rock starting at 3 p.m. Friday. Senior pitcher Michael Rocha will be going for his fourth win in as many starts.

He recorded a complete-game shutout in his last start against San Diego State on Friday.
