Red Edges Out White in Spring Game Scrimmage

NORMAN, Okla. -- The White Team took an early lead in the Spring Game scrimmage, but that was the only one it would have all day, as linebacker Travis Lewis and his Red Team came up victorious in a 20-14 triumph Saturday afternoon at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

And it was a game head coach Bob Stoops said the Sooners got a lot out of.

After place kicker Michael Hunnicutt gave the Red Team an early 3-0 lead, the White dominated the rest of the way.

It started a drive later when quarterback Drew Allen took his offense down the field and finished it off with a 16-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver DeJuan Miller.

Then, cornerback Gabe Lynn intercepted White Team quarterback Landry Jones' attempt, setting up the Red Team for what was to follow.

Running back Brennan Clay, who had a nice day, blasted through the hole for a 17-yard touchdown run to make it 14-3.

Hunnicutt cut it to 14-6 with his second field goal of the day, a 35-yarder.

But the Red Team added one of its own by place kicker Jimmy Stevens to extend the advantage again to 11, where it would stand at the half.

And that's all the scoring that would take place for a long while, as the second half featured a much more defensive battle.

Teams traded possessions throughout the entire third quarter before the White Team finally scored again and under interesting circumstances.

Following a fumble by Red Team running back Brandon Williams, quarterback Blake Bell switched teams and tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Trey Franks.

Bell also completed the 2-point conversion on a pass over the middle to tight end James Hanna, narrowing the deficit to just three at 17-14.

But the White Team couldn't ever get back on top, as Stevens added his second field goal from 25 yards out to cap off the scoring in the contest.

Jones finished the afternoon 6-for-11 for 40 yards with an interception, while Allen shined with a 16-for-29 performance, throwing for 179 yards and a touchdown to go along with a pick, and Bell was 11-for-24 for 67 yards, also tossing a touchdown and an INT.

Along with Miller, Franks had a solid receiving day, racking up seven receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown, and Jaz Reynolds performed well on the other side with the Red Team, catching four passes for 67 yards.

White Team running back Dominique Whaley led all rushers with 65 yards on 10 attempts, while Clay finished with 59 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

Strong safety Aaron Colvin had a game-high eight tackles, while Lynn and defensive tackle Casey Walker each recorded a sack.
