The saga for the services of junior college all-american cornerback Chijioke Onyenegecha took another interesting turn last week when Arizona State won their appeal, which makes Chijioke's letter of intent valid with the Sun Devils.
This does not guarantee the fact that Chijioke will play for the Sun Devils, because he is greatly upset at them and does not want to play for them. Onyenegecha originally signed an LOI with Arizona State on signing day, but has since wished to sign with Oklahoma, citing that his LOI was invalid due to a lack of signature from a legal guardian. The NCAA initially ruled in Onyenegecha's favor, but that jugdement was overturned last week in an appeal by Arizona State.
Onyenegecha's junior college coach, George Rush, says that Chijioke will appeal the ruling. Onyenegecha was at a track meet on Saturday and was not available for comment.
I get the feeling that he is thinking over a couple of things. First, I don't think he wants to play for Arizona State, and even though they are defiant in stating that they want him and he can play for them, I think this situation has spoiled their relationship. He could decide to go ahead and play for them, but right now Arizona State is not his favorite program. I also don't think he wants to sit out a year either, and I don't think OU feels that is in his best interest to sit out a year. If he insisted that was what he wanted to do then that would be fine with OU, but again OU doesn't feel that is in his best interest.
So, Chijioke will go through the appeal process that he has left to him and he feels he still has some issues in his favor that he can bring to the table. If Chijioke wins those appeals then he will still be at OU. If he loses those appeals, he doesn't know what he wants to do. One option that he has before him is to petition for the NFL and make himself for a special NFL draft. This is not something that he wants to do either at this time, but he doesn't want to play for Arizona State at the moment either.
So, you have to feel for Chijioke in this case and you have to wonder how Arizona State can be so heartless. I have heard the OU coaches say a million times that if a player doesn't want to play for them they won't make him. Arizona State is trying to make Chijioke play for them and he doesn't want to at this point because the coaching situation has changed in the secondary. That is a very good reason why a cornerback wouldn't want to play for a certain college.
