Baseball Postseason Breakdown Series: Day IV

NORMAN, Okla. -- The fourth day of the series is now in, as Sooners Illustrated discusses the most heart-wrenching defeat in 2011.

April 15, 2011--OSU 8, OU 7

Midway through this one, the Sooners appeared to be cruising. They held a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, but that's when disaster struck. Center fielder Chris Ellison couldn't put away a routine fly ball, which paved the way for six unearned Cowboys runs. OU responded with a pair of runs in the next frame to tie the game at seven, but that only set the stage for a devastating finish. OSU's Dane Phillips blasted a walk-off shot from Sooner pitcher Bobby Shore to give the Cowboys a 1-0 series lead and 1-1 season split at the time. The Cowboys would eventually go on to win the series two games to win and split the season series at two apiece. Things not only in this series, but also in the conference race and postseason play would have set up differently had OU not dropped this one.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's version of the postseason breakdown series.
