Ranking the Most Important on Offense: No. 3

Sooners Illustrated is just a couple spots away from No. 1 now with today's version of the countdown.

No. 3:

Player: Brennan Clay

Position: Starting running back

The rundown: Clay, a 5-foot-11, 194-pound back from Scripps Ranch High School in San Diego, Calif., played as a backup in 2010. He had 36 carries for 127 yards in that role, but he only saw action in nine games because of an injury he suffered in the Florida State game. After catching a swing pass, Clay made a man miss and then was walloped, forcing the medical crew to mobilize him and remove him on a stretcher. When he returned to action a few games later, he assumed a role as a reserve running back, rushing for 49 yards against Iowa State and a career-high 12 carries for 38 yards vs. Colorado. He also returned six kickoffs for 119 yards.

Expectations for 2011: Clay will have to shoulder a huge amount of the load left behind by star running back DeMarco Murray. The Sooners' all-time career touchdown leader, among other categories, has moved onto the NFL, and it's Clay's time to step into the starting spot. Not only that, but he'll be returning kickoffs again, too, alongside Ryan Broyles. So, he'll have to be consistent there. If anyone can do it, though, it's this sophomore who came out of high school as a five-star prospect and the sixth ranked running back in the country.
