Ranking the Most Important on Defense: No. 24

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated presents the second day of the most crucial defensive players countdown.

No. 24:

Player: James Haynes

Position: Backup defensive back

The rundown: Haynes is an athletic 6-foot-1, 189-pound DB from West Orange-Stark High School in Orange, Texas. He came out of high school as a three-star recruit following a 2009 season in which he picked off six passes and broke up 12, as well as working on the other side of the ball, where he racked up 571 rushing yards, 284 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. The No. 24 cornerback out of the 2010 class then redshirted last season and was listed as a backup strong safety to Aaron Colvin on the spring depth chart, but has since been moved off the two-deep.

Expectations for 2011: Although the starting secondary is basically set between four or five guys, there's a lot of room there for competition. Haynes's presence is one of many that allows them to have that competition. Some special teams time is in store for Haynes this year.

No. 25: Julian Wilson
